Tutorial: Internalize Your 360 Stock HDD (lots of pics)

Postby Mr Bloink » Fri Jan 12, 2007 1:51 pm

This is a tutorial on how to internalize your stock 360 hard disk drive.

Disclaimer
I do not take any responsibilities for your mistakes on this mod. It can be tough soldering to the small points so i would not recommend doing this if you have no experience soldering. This will void you 360's warrantee and your hard disk drives warrantee.

Ok, now down to the mod!

This is my first tutorial so go easy on me.

Ok.

Tools and equipment that you will need:

- a sata data cable
- a sata power cable
- (instead of buying each separately i bought a sata data and power cable)
- wire
- electrical tape
- soldering iron
- solder
- t10, t9, t8,& t6 screw bits
- 360
- 360 hdd
- hot glue and hot glue gun or something of this nature
- and above all, PATIENTS

How to do the mod:

First, Get your HDD, t6 and t10 screw-bits, and your sata power and data cable

Image

Then, you need to locate these screws and unscrew them with your t6 bit

Image

here is the drive without the screws

Image

then you have to unscrew these screws with a t10 screw bit

Image

this is what it looks like when the metal bit is off

Image

here is the hdd when its out of the case

Image

i tested to see it the cable i was using fit

Image

yes it its

this is the mess i have made after taking the 360 case appart. i am not going to tell you how to do this because its simple and its in a tut on here already.

Image

This is the power side

Image

this is the data side

Image

there are seven pins on the outside, pin #7 is on the side where the drop is located in this pic

Image

I cut the data side where i showed you above and found 8 wires. i twisted the 2 middle wires together. i then made sticky things to label the wires. numbered 1-7. remember 7 = the drop!

Image curtsy of firestorm

Image

Image

Image

then i cut the molex side off and cut down the yellow and black wires which are 12volts and its -. the red and black are 5 volts and its -. these are what the hdd will use.

Image

this is where to solder on the bottom side of the motherboard under where the hdd normally connects. pin # 14 isnt used so DO NOT SOLDER ANYTHING TO IT!!!!!!!. pick one 5 volt and one -.

Image

this is what mine looked like once i was done soldering. i used brown for positive and red for the negative.sorry about that.

Image

this is where i ran the wire

Image

I had to cut the little prong on the left side of my fan so that the fan could fit in.

Image

this is where i would place it if i where you

Image

place it between the two red lines i highlighted

Image

there we go i am done. thank you for reading and i hope you do this and are successful. if it works for you, feel free to post your pics and suggestions!

remember make sure that no 2 points are bridged or bad things can happen.

I will have a vid posted in the next week.

thanks!!

very good tut even though I dont think I will be doing it, because Im gonna put a extra HDD in there for movies and music in the spot you put yours also for making sure it does not move at all you should go to your local hobby store and pick up some 'servo tape' it is super strong and padded (used for R/C servos and ESC's so they dont fall and the padding reduces vibration) thought that might take out a rattle or something for some one if they have that problem.

why are you apologizing, you did nothing wrong. any idiot with half a brain knows that you have to secure it in some fashion.

Ya I was just throwing suggestions out there, I was not bashing you or anything because I could note make a tut nearly that good.

you could easily... just not in the same mannor

evr1 by now shud no that you cannot use a larger hard disk drive to store game data, only media. If u wanted an 80 gig media drive follow these steps:

1. cut the data side of the sata power and data cable the same as i did
2. cut the molex adaptor off of the power side and strip all 4 wires
3. solder the red and black to the same place i did
4. solder the yellow to the 12 volts under the psu
5. solder the yellows - to the - under the psu
6. put a on-of switch on each of the - wires
7. plug the cable into the 80 gig drive and close the case

you need to have the 2 switches because the xbox will short if there are 2 drives being read. unplug you stock hdd and turn both switches on to listen to media. turn both switches off and plug in ur stock hdd to play games. i would not recomend internalizing both the stock hdd and the 80 gig drive. i would only internalize the 80 gig drive and keep the stock one external

I do not know how much sense this made as i only woke up an hour ago.

if it does not make sense i will ty and make a better tutorial on this later.

I will not be doing this tho because i do not have an 80 gig sata hdd lying around, and i do not have the time right now, but maybe in the future i will do it and post it with pictures and the whole nine yards, but thats for a later date
