360 powered by PC PSU

Postby tizz78 » Fri Jun 15, 2007 11:41 pm

The purpose of me attempting this mod was simple : I have 4 xbox 360's and 2 360 PSU's . As anyone can " do the math " you can see why I did it and especially looking at the price of 360 PSU's . I had this old one sitting around so I figured I'd go for it .For this mod I used an older AT 250 watt power supply that already had a switch to turn it on and off . If you use an ATX power supply you'll have to connect two wires together to keep it in " standby " or " always on " . Llamma and myself are NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU FRY YOUR 360 ! Do this mod at your own risk !!
Step 1 - Open the 360 console . If you can't figure out how do a google search , it's out there .

Step 2 - Carefully remove the 360 motherboard . Flip over the mobo and locate the power plug .

Step 3 - VERY CAREFULLY solder the needed wires to their respected pins . These pins are labeled 1-10 . Voltages of pins are as follows :
Pins 1-3 are Ground
Pins 4-6 are 12 volts
Pin 7 is reference signal ( Usually blue wire on PC PSU )
Pin 8 is 5 volts
Pic below ....

Step 4 - Now we need to " notch " the shielding as shown below to let the wires fit . A Dremel tool worked for me .

Step 5 - Next we need to notch the bottom case for the wires as shown below .

Step 6 - Now we need to prepare the PC PSU . To do this we need to install connectors to the wires on the 360 and the PSU , similar to the pic below . I heat shrinked any solder joints and shrinked all my wires of the same voltage together .This gives it a cleaner look , but is not necessary if you like tripping over wires . :D
Also notice how I made the same voltage wires have the same connectors and grounds are opposite of the +'s .

Step 7 - Well , now all you have left is to test and play .

I hope anyone else that has done this has good luck and have no issues . Mine works great , and I can build a custom stand and run a few fans ( Also shown in the pics ) .....
ENJOY !!

"Pin 7 is reference signal ( Usually blue wire on PC PSU )"

I believe there's only one blue wire on the psu, which should be reference or signal from the motherboard to the psu to power up......

Hello there!

I did install an ATX PSU a while ago after the official PSU got fried. But I did it in a different way: I cut the power cable that plugs in the back of the 360, and I found 10 wires (4 yellow, 4 black, one blue, and one red). I connected each individual wire to another from the ATX PSU with the same color (plus connecting pin 13 to pin 14 for the ATX PSU to power up). It worked fine for a couple of months then the 360 started giving me 3ROD while playing--I believe that is because of not getting enough power or the tape around the wires is melting.. I don't know.

I want to know what am I doing wrong? Why in your tutorial there are only 3 wires of black and yellow? Where should I connect the blue wire on the power cable to the ATX PSU to have it on standby?

Thanks in advance!

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread, but I wanted to clarify a couple things before I fried something..

Using this link:

http://pinouts.ru/Power/atxpower_pinout.shtml

I have determined which wires I need to use...

But I have a couple questions..

Is the "reference signal" mentioned for pin 7 of the 360 the same wire that is listed as grey PWR_OK in wire #8 in the afore link??

Also, according to the afore link, do I need to attach a Momentary Contact Button to Wire #14 and GRND to turn on the power supply??

Any assist would be appreciated..

I want to do this with the older AT PSU. At the site below it refers to the blue wire being -12V it is the same for the ATX PSU.

http://pinouts.ru/Power/MotherboardPower_pinout.shtml

Is -12V the "reference signal". I would assume it is because devilbuster connected the blue to blue and it worked. I just want to be sure before I go fry my system.

no -12 is not the reference signal, some older computer components required both a +12 and a -12 to work. It's just a different kind of voltage.

So the reference signal is the grey wire of a ATX PSU?
What would I do to use a AT PSU? Would that be the orange wire?
Do I even need the reference signal wire?

Well I got guts went in blind and i successfully did it.

the blue wire (reference signal) is not needed at all just the 3 yellows, 3 blacks and 1 red

I believe if you add a transistor to the blue and connect it to the green of the ATX PSU it will allow you to turn on and off the power from the xbox power button but I cannot confirm this. Search the forums on xbox-scene

Hi all,

I just did this mod and im having some issues, all 12v/5v feeds are working as tested with a multimeter. This PSU is rated at 17a/12v and like 40 on 5v.

Now all soldered up properly, AV lead is in, dvd drive as well (trying to repair a RROD). It turns on flashes 4 red lights then goes to 2 (left two) about 1 second later. I cant get the dvd drive or anything to open either.

Its an old Hitachi drive console if that makes a difference.

You need to let this 'oven' you bought cool down for a while.

I just did this, works like a charm. I did what vdiablo69 did and left out the blue wire, mainly because it isn't a reference wire on my PSU and I'm too lazy to look it up. BTW this board was a 3RLOD. Reason I did this mod was because my power supply for it was faulty already. It took me putting a mini-torch to specific sections on the board to fix the 3RLOD.

Anyway I got the motherboard and components as well as a PSU and a switch sitting on a piece of board next to my tv with fans and running smoothly.

BTW I put a fat blue led light behind all of this...like putting rims on a POS car...friends got a kick out of it.

seems a messy solution where you could knacker your 360, i just bought the PSU Energyzer from divineo for £15
not got round to using it yet thou, but seems a much more sensible option
