I've damaged two discs testing these defective first-release units. One of my testers did indeed turn it on its vertical, I heard the scratching occur, however I was okay with this as the unit's PSU was hot, and the disc was already overheated\producing wavy heat marks at the system had already flaked out at this point.
The 2nd time this occured, the PSU was hanging with 360 free airflow, and the unit was on its side, undisturbed to shock and it had occured again. Both discs were NFSMW for $69.99. This looks to be a costly testing procedure indeed. However the 2nd time it hadn't made the disc inoperable.
I haven't had this occur with any DVD-Video even when the PSU was not free-hanging. (We just received a HDD, and I'll sacrifice some original xbox games in the future, however I don't know if it will reoccur, it only seems to happen with the 360 discs even though they are the same media)
Microsoft has not responded as I had figured. It was a request out of curtiousy for testing means, as by no means are they required to replace damaged media under their limited-warranty.
