http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/news/Xbox-360-Game-Disc-Scratched.htm

Share you thoughts and experiences about it. Does anyone have a drive tray different than what is in the photos. I remember there being a samsung drive in the dev kits.. wonder if any shipped retail.

I stumbled on this article on digg.com and if I may just say that this EXACT thing happened to me as I decided to do exactly what you said (turn the console from vertical to horizontal) and I RUINED my copy of Need For Speed Most Wanted. Needless to say it was the most horrific sound and even more disappointing when I tried to play NFSMW after this happened. I was pissed.

Slightly off topic I suppose.

But I had this happen to my Halo 2 copy on my regular XBox.
Although it was odd...

My friend and I was playing XBox's and recording material from two different XBox's and my TV was the only one that we could record from.
So I turned it off and moved it (didn't wait much until moving it), didn't hear anything at all. Hooked it up to the other TV and turn it on. So I wait... and wait... and wait. Then the error message comes up: This disc cannot be recognized... I go wtf? So I look at it, and there's a thin, but viewable scratch in a perfect circle I guess at the right spot to not be able to load it up.

Good ol' brasso did the job though.
Maybe some Brasso will work for these scratched games?

Heres an Idea I thought of, but since I dont own a 360 yet I figured I'd tell Lamma. Is there a way to just file/sand off the part of the drive that is scratching the crap out of the games? Just an idea.

Dudes, I can't help but wonder how it didn't occur to you that moving the machine with the disc spun up would cause trouble. It's just common sense ... really ... got to be smarter than the little white box.

Anyone ever heard of a Gyroscope :?: :!: That's esentially what you have when the disk is spinning that fast. When you try to rotate the unit, the disk is going to want to stay put.

Conservation of Angular Momentum.

Simple Physics :!:

Yes its simple physics. its user error or just plain idiotic.. however you want to slice it but its still an issue people shoudl be aware of. It happens.. out of habbit or out of lack of knowledge. It happened to me and I was careful and I know better. You dont always think about those things when your in the middle of stuff. There are alot of people who arent in tune with what you can and cant do with a dvd drive or anything else tech related. Remember not all Xbox customers are electronics savvy just because they have a xbox. Hence why there are quite a few reports of the problem.

I will say the old xbox didnt have a problem when moving it.. sure you could probably get it to happen if you tried hard enough but it doesnt just happen from a slight movement or none at all in some peoples case. Granted the xbox 1 dvd drive was not spinning near as fast either.

According to GameShout.com Microsoft says they will not be replacing damaged discs. Microsoft does warn us on page 11 of volume 1 setup "Remove the disc before moving the console or tilting it between horizontal and vertical positions"

Lol oh i do love microsoft!! So UK are paying £50 a game, they scratch easily while in the console and microsoft wont replace them.....hmmmm doesnt impress me much. Can only imagine how many kids on xmas day knock over and scratch the 1 game they got and oh...muuuuummmmmmm.

Confirmed

I've damaged two discs testing these defective first-release units. One of my testers did indeed turn it on its vertical, I heard the scratching occur, however I was okay with this as the unit's PSU was hot, and the disc was already overheated\producing wavy heat marks at the system had already flaked out at this point.

The 2nd time this occured, the PSU was hanging with 360 free airflow, and the unit was on its side, undisturbed to shock and it had occured again. Both discs were NFSMW for $69.99. This looks to be a costly testing procedure indeed. However the 2nd time it hadn't made the disc inoperable.

I haven't had this occur with any DVD-Video even when the PSU was not free-hanging. (We just received a HDD, and I'll sacrifice some original xbox games in the future, however I don't know if it will reoccur, it only seems to happen with the 360 discs even though they are the same media)

Microsoft has not responded as I had figured. It was a request out of curtiousy for testing means, as by no means are they required to replace damaged media under their limited-warranty.

just a few thoughts here first why would you not use a blank dvd-r or dvd+r just to show the damage to test with??

second the video was a great idea but 2 things i have to point out on the video for the doubting masses first right after the disc was inserted the video paused and resumed leading to the point it may have beena dubbed video and disk was replaced with a previously damaged disk or damaged in another manner and inserted to cause conflict with xbox / microsoft.....

secondly considering if the original disk was put in and left in there should have been a 2nd video showing the game inoperable so that there is further verification of proof....

i myself am a ps2 nut no offense to the xbox gamers.. but ps2 had same issue turn something on its side can make it go funky and make funny noises ..... mind u my ps2 never ate or damaged the disks like in the video or pics shwon...

hope the other testers choose to use blanks for 50 cents instread of 50 bucks

We used the bonus disc that came with Quake 4 so we were not intentionally ruining a game disk. We tried a blank CD-r but it wouldnt spin up since it would realize almost immediately that the disc was blank. Tried burning music on it an had smilar troubles. But with the game disc it spins it up like the jet take off. I had to trim down the video to the most pertinant pieces so it wasnt 3+MB. I had considered putting up the video with no cuts but hey if you dont believe it is real throw your favorite game disc in a 360 and give it a try ;-)

I have never moved my XBOX 360 from Vertical to Horizontal or vice versa while the xbox was being used. But. My PGR3 was still scratched. You guys seem to forget that when you have surround sound there are vibrations occuring. Also if the fans change speeds in xbox 360 there are vibrations occuring. So that doesn't make up for bad design.

With all the little kids around the world you don't have Nintendo having problems with the gamecube discs. You can just about drop a gamecube from a 2nd story window and it would still work. They spent too much time making it look good than thinking about practical issues that could happen to the X360. In comparison the original XBOX doesn't kill discs. Why should this one.

All it would take is one person crashing into one of the wired controllers to kill your disk. You can turn a PC dvd drive and it doesn't kill disks either. I think they need to go back to the drawing board and replace the DVD drive. I feel sorry for people that live near trains. They are screwed. :)
