very impressive....
i would imagine the sensitivity on the buttons would be a little different. as described in the tut...
how does this affect the battery?

I havent had it together long enough to try it out, the impact should be minimal.

Alternative power ...

Postby Danny-B- » Thu Feb 02, 2006 6:37 pm

Hi there , i love the mod .. as soon as i saw it i knew i was gonna have to do it :)

I ordered some 2MM ceramic red LEDS which should do the job just the same.... anyway im kinda looking for another source for the power, i thought i may be able to use the same points as the Green power LED uses ... would this be possible ?

P.S. i will only be using Two LEDS one for each shoulder button.

Very cool, awesome job guys! :)

So, will you put together a package with all the leds, transistors, cables and instructions that you need for this mod and sell it in your shop?
That would be so nice.

It may work I didn't try it on mine, the supply voltate seems to not be an issue I think you'll find the supply to be about 5.47V when the unit is on. If you are thinking of just using the ground off of the green I just dont know... I would assume they would not design the circuit to support twice the miliamps if it was not designed to do it. I have not traced back the the ABXY PCB any further than to the fexible ribbon cable. I measured the two resistors and come up with 1.8K Ohm (thats right "K" ohms thousand ohms) on green and 1.2K Ohm on the orange

so in the above photo under the word Alternate orange, that big plane is acutally the positive input and the two resistors are going to ground. Umm that just doesnt make sense to me... I'd expect a resistor to be on the positive side prior to the LED reducing the input voltage and be a vaule around 80 Ohms. Maybe there is a different calculation you do if you put the resistor on the negative leg...

If any one can clear up my confusion please drop us a line! :)

I would still use the transistor but the spot you marked, I think I will be using plus a convenient ground the next time around. I think it was unnecessary to wire directly to where the battery connects but once it was done I didnt see a need to mess with it. What you propose may work fine, proceed at your own risk and keep us posted with your resutls. I wouldnt have added the transistor if I didnt think it was necessary, its a cheap component from Radio Shack and I'd say its the safer way to go. I'm a big fan of try it out and see if it works reliable results are more important to me than if its the "right" way or not.

Any chance at selling a kit that would have every part we need? (including faceplate and buttons)
