Error Code 6 "FIX" is incorrect

Postby Textbook » Wed Sep 14, 2005 12:58 pm

I got banned from LIVE and had a softmod and through getting a new drive in that xbox, I managed to lock all my drives to an EEPROM that is not currently on any of my xboxes. So, I keep getting Error Code 6, which means my xbox can't unlock the hard drive because it is currently locked to a different EEPROM than the one that's on the motherboard of the xbox trying to boot it. I know how to fix it with a little bit of effort, but I saw the easy fix on your website http://llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/6.htm. It says this:

Fixing Error Code 6

You may potentially damage your game console as well as void the warranty by opening it. If you do so I am not responsible.

To fix the Error Code 6 on the xbox you will need.
2 xboxes (one that works find and your broken one)
Torx 20 screw driver (to take the cases apart)
Torx 10 screwdriver (to take your hard drive out
with)
Hard drive Y-Splitter Adapter Cable (found here)
Atleast one music track on the working Xbox.

Ok getting started I will be calling the broken Xbox
Xbox 1 and the working xbox Xbox 2,
First you need to open both xboxes. After you get them
apart take the hard drive out of Xbox 1 (the broken
one remember) and place it upside down on the Xbox 2's
dvd rom drive. Next unplug the power cable going to
Xbox 2's hard drive. Then take your Y-Splitter and
connect it to both xbox hard drives and power cable
you unpluged. Now plug your power and AV cables into
the xbox and boot it without a game in. When you get
to the Menu go into your music and play a song for
about 5 secs (or the whole song it is up to you).
After that back all the way back to your menu and
unplug the IDE cable (NOT the power cable) from your
hard drive and plug it into your Xbox 1's hard drive
and try to go into a menu. It will freeze on you but
this is ok. Wait until it gives you the Error Code 21.
When Error Code 21 comes up power off the xbox, unplug
the Xbox 1's hard drive and put it back into Xbox 1.
Reconnect all the cable to Xbox 1's hard drive and
boot it. It should boot fine. Now power off and put
both Xboxes back together.

This doesn't work. It may work for error code 5 (HDD Unlocked) but not for error code 6. I just tried it to make sure. I still get error code 6. That process wouldn't magically lock my hard drive to the EEPROM on another xbox. Also, this forum is labeled "Harware Forum" instead of "Hardware Forum" (forgot the D)

I had wondered if that was a working method of fixing error 6. Everything I know says it should not work but the person submitting it was quite insistant that it did so I thought I would post it in case it helped anyone.

You say you know how to resolve with a little bit of effort, what do you have in mind? Replacing the locked drives is the only other option I know of if the password is not known. Or do you have the eeprom it was locked with?

Yeah, I have the EEPROM and HDD Key that it was locked with, so I'm pretty sure I can just hook up the drive to my PC and use either hddunlock or unlockx (both from xbins, but I'm not sure which one to use). Have you ever unlocked an xbox hard drive in a computer if you have the EEPROM and HDD Key? If so, I would appreciate any help in doing so. I have softmodded xboxes, so replacing the EEPROMS on them isn't the easiest thing because I've never hotswapped before (well, one time).

I think you just want ATAPWD.EXE on a windows boot disc.

I did some searching, found a tutorial on XS and tried it and it worked. Just had to print off the HDD Key, then make an MS-DOS Bootable Floppy Disk and run atapwd, hdunlock, and hddisabl. Worked like a charm. Also, I was wondering, has anybody ever figured out the http://www.llamma.com/xbox/up_for_grabbs.htm contest you put on? I would love to know how to do this as well. It's only a matter of time before somebody at a Data Recovery place sees that. I currently have a 250GB WD hard drive that I was suppossed to check out because it wasn't working properly. The drive powers up fine, and I am getting Error 6, which is a good sign. I don't think my friend has the HDD Key or an EEPROM backup, so the drive is worthless unless somebody finds the way. Plus, that email you got from Phillip about the LiveInfo thing looked cool, I almost tried it, but it's just giving this weird password you say? I still might try it, I'm kind of bored.

EDIT: Tried it with the HDD Key supplied by LiveInfo and it said done after unlock but when I did hddisabl, it said device not ready. And then, when I checked it with atapwd, it was still locked. But then I used atapwd and chose to unlock with master password, typed in TEAMASSEMBLY, and it unlocked it. Then, I disabled using master password, typed in TEAMASSEMBLY, and it disabled it. I checked it with atapwd and it indeed was unlocked and disabled. I put it in my xbox and got error 7, so it really is dead and worthless.

Yeah, I tried this method with error six, and no luck, but I can still unlock and get 5, so I will try it with error 5 and see if it works!

Thanks
Xboxes can be modified?

O i had an idea al of a sudden, what if you took a blank hdd, and used an auto installer to install the new hdd onto ur xbox (the one that had the large hdd) then using a softmod you install it, backup the eeprom and hdd key, transfer the info to your comp and make a xboxhd (found in the usual places) and unlocked it that way. Do you guys think that would work?]

i dont see how this method can even be thought as a way to fix error 6..error 6 is cannot unlock HDD...the HD has been lock to a different eeprom....
lets say i have a 300 gig HDD in a working xbox..everything is working fine..but i want it in a different xbox for some reason....if i just throw it in there it would give me error 6. does it make sense that i could just hotswap and play a song to get the HDD to unlock from an eeprom and re-lock to a different eeprom? no, it doesn't.

i actually think this tut was intended for an xbox with error 16....infact...im going to test that right now...im gonna put an xbox HDD of mine into an error 16....im gonna hotswap it with an xbox with a different eerpom first..then with the xbox with the same eeprom...lets see what happens...

although i dont know how to explain the whole y splitter thing....so i guess i will do a the y splitter thing, then if that dont work do a hotswap...so....

*testing*

done....

i was surprised how hard it is for a HDD to get to error 16 (since i tend to not intentionally break HDD's)...i eventually got it to error 13..which would turn into 16 if it was unplugged long enough....and nothing worked....
my conclusion is that either this guy was confused about which error this fixes..or is toying around....and this doesn't do anything but waste your time..i would think the latter...

unless some one can make sense for me how doing his could at all possibly help an error 6....

The fix for error 6 is get the correct eeprom.bin and I beleive that is your only solution.

well...you dont necessarily need the eeprom to recover a HDD...
if you just deleted a system file...you can do a hotswap into xboxhdm and recover the HDD and you dont need the eeprom file....but if you need to rebuild a new drive, you will need the eeprom to lock the new drive to the motherboard.

k...I have a system with error 21...it boots to flubber screen...plays audio cd and lets me check all the settings, but when i would go into the memory screen it would give me the "system needs repaired...call support" and then would give me error 21...so...I tried this method of hotswaping...and...and...
it kinda worked...now i can see all the saved games on the drive, but it still wont play any games...hmmm how do you like them apples

you may need to attempt formatting it a couple times....i dont know why, but i had to do the same thing once...it half worked...then it worked a little better...then the HDD was as good as new...its worth a shot

Error 6

Postby MIAH2176 » Sun Jun 04, 2006 7:15 am

I tried this, as i have an xbox with error 6 and dont have the eeprom. It gives an error 21 when you plug in the locked HDD into the working xbox, but once you power down and re install both xboxs you get the dreaded error 6 again, unless you do run xbobhdm whilst the HDD has error 21,will this work?

Suggestions folks?
