360 Disc Grip

Postby WorldFormula » Fri Nov 20, 2009 5:41 pm

How do you make discs grab the spindle again? I have one where the rubber on it had dust all over it, I brushed that off but the problem persists. This is actually a blessing because I expected it to be a laser issue...this is much easier. For now I've just used tape so far, but how to fix this permanently? I know I saw a solution awhile back, but I forget what it was.

I usually clean them by putting just enough Isopropryl Alcohol on the end of a Q-tip to get it damp, then run it around the rubber ring. This usually get's mine tacky again....but I believe too much alcohol may dry out the rubber so I only use it sparingly, just enough to get it tacky, then I stop cleaning it.

I just use diluted ispropyl, somewhere around 40% and use that.

Hmm. It didn't work, then I accidentally pulled the rubber piece off and noticed glue on the spindle. That gripped the disc well, so I thought I'd just leave it and see what happened...then I put the casing on. After loud grinding noises, what sounded like a chainsaw hitting solid metal, and an "Unplayable Disc" error, I pulled the disc out to notice tiny circular scratches on the disc. I can't figure out what caused it, and for now I'm resurrecting an old drive for that 360. Its really strange, I've tried several different tops, added pressure, bent the thing in and out and nothing changed. I bought it off of ebay with 'problems' so something might be VERY wrong with it. So...anyone expierience anything similar?

I know that on some DVD units I have repaired, the Laser would actually 'bump' up against the disc when trying to read it. This always occured when the Laser was completely bad, even beyond a pot tweak...never scratched a disc though.

Have no idea what else would come into contact with the disc other than the laser...that sucks :|

Nope, and when the top case was off it didn't have a problem. The glue could keep the disc without the magnet, so it didn't need it. And it would read fine without the top cover. Just when I put that on, it would make ridiculous noises and fail massively.

Damn...you are braver than me trusting the residual glue from the pad to hold down the disc without any magnets  I've had one come flying off with my face a few inches away while trying to check out the Laser read because I did not have my magnet quite centered.

What brand of DVD drive are you working on? The only reason I ask is that the magnet fixture is different from the Hitachi / Samsung vs. the LiteOn / BenQ. Perhaps if it is a LiteOn or BenQ one of the little plastic tabs broke that hold the two pieces of the magnet housing together and therefore could be causing the magnet to actually 'pull' down part of the casing when it closes with the lid on it and therefore making the loud noise? Just a thought....

Hitachi, but I've already tried two different tops, so it has to be something in the drive. And yea, maybe that was a bit nuts trusting it but it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Haha, that like the time I learned the hard way to check for cracked disks.

I was using a burned cd with the top off (You dont need the magnet for it to read cds) and the disk shattered. I have a scar 3mm from my eye from a fragment.

Lol. Worst I've got is a burn off my crepe maker. It's formed a nice scar on my arm.

Looks like I'm the only one without a scar to reflect my success as a true warrior in this trade....will have to get busy this weekend on a few more boxes to see if I can fix that
